Police foil Balsall Heath cash machine ram raid

Police foiled ram raiders who dragged a cash point from a shop last night (1st March) in Balsall Heath.

Witnesses phoned 999 when they saw a vehicle smash into Reels Video on Edward Road.

The cash machine was left lying in the road

The thieves tied a strap around the free-standing cash machine inside the store and dragged it out using two Land Rovers.

But armed police arrived within seven minutes of the 999 call, which came in at 11.02pm.

The gang fled, leaving the cash machine lying in the road. One of the two Land Rovers crashed on nearby Shutlock Lane. A suspect was arrested in nearby Highbury Park.

One police car and a car belonging to a member of the public were rammed as the thieves made their escape. Police are now appealing for the public’s help in finding further suspects.

Sgt Gareth Mitchell, from Force CID, said between six and eight masked raiders were involved.

He said: “Our thanks go to the members of the public who were able to provide a running commentary and guide officers to the right spot within minutes.

“We’ve recovered one of the vehicles and made an arrest, but we need to hear from anyone who we have not already spoken to who might have seen or who has footage of what happened.”

A man aged 22 from the Acocks Green area was arrested nearby on suspicion of burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, driving offences and possession of cannabis.

He remains in custody. The vehicle that made off was described as a dark Land Rover.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact West Midlands Police on 101, quoting log 2457 of yesterday’s date.
