Hundreds of people gathered today to bid a heartfelt farewell to former Yardley Wood bus driver Peter Harris, whose funeral and wake celebrated a life dedicated to family, friends and the local community.
Pete, who passed away peacefully at home on 4th June, aged 78, was a familiar face to generations of passengers after spending many years driving the 18 and 50 bus services. For many in south Birmingham, he was far more than just a bus driver – he was someone who always had time for a chat, a joke or a witty remark.
The service at Lodge Hill Crematorium was followed by a wake at the Old Farm Hotel in Bournville, with hundreds of people attending throughout the afternoon to remember a man who clearly left a lasting impression on so many lives.

Those gathered heard stories from across Pete’s life, from his childhood through to his later years. His family spoke about his deep appreciation for the environment, his lifelong love of the Isle of Wight and, above all else, the importance he placed on people.
Pete was remembered as someone who could be sarcastic and direct, never one to sugar-coat his opinions, but whose humour and warmth shone through in everything he did. His quick wit and unmistakable personality brought laughter as well as tears during a service that reflected the man so many had come to know and love.
The turnout itself spoke volumes. Former colleagues, friends, neighbours and passengers came together to celebrate a life that touched countless people across Birmingham, with many sharing fond memories of Pete from his years behind the wheel.
Today’s farewell was not only a chance to say goodbye, but also a reminder of the impact one person can have on a community. Judging by the number of people who came to honour him, Pete Harris will be remembered with great affection for many years to come.
In keeping with Pete’s values and his affection for the Isle of Wight, donations at his funeral were collected for Storeroom2010, an independent furniture re-use charity based on the island. The charity helps disadvantaged families furnish their homes at affordable prices, improving quality of life in an area that experiences disproportionately high levels of unemployment and child poverty compared with many parts of the UK – https://www.storeroom.org.uk/
