Maypole Sub Station Fire Leaves 4480 Homes In The Dark

4480 Home owners where where left in the dark last night after a 11000 volt switch failed at a sub station on the Alcester Road South in Maypole.

Shortly after midnight Western Power Distribution received a call from a member of the public who reported seeing smoke billowing from the sub station. Emergency engineers where quickly dispatched to the scene to investigate.

Moments later Maypole, Druids Heath, Hollywood, Wythall and parts of Warstock and Kings Heath where plunged into darkness after a fire broke out.

Fire crews from Billesley Community Fire Station where quickly called to the scene by engineers who managed to isolate the fire before crews arrived. Fire Fighters with breathing apparatus entered the sub station and used Co2 and foam to extinguish the fire.

A spokesperson from Western Power Distribution told B14 News: “Within an hour after the equipment failure at the sub station we managed to re-route electrical supplies bringing back electricity to 85% of homes effected by the power cut. Supplies to those still effected had electricity restored shortly after 4:30AM”
