Council tenants offered new way to cut rent costs through shopping app

Published on

Birmingham City Council tenants can now use a mobile app to help with rent payments by turning everyday shopping savings into direct contributions towards their rent.

The Housing Perks app provides discounts at a range of major retailers, including Sainsbury’s, ASDA, Morrisons and Argos. Tenants can choose to either keep the savings or use them to reduce their rent bills.

Around 6,000 tenants have already downloaded the app, saving a combined total of about £22,000.

Councillor Nicky Brennan, Cabinet Member for Housing and Homelessness, said:

“We are committed to doing all we can to support our tenants through the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, and I am pleased to add the Housing Perks app to our other cost-of-living support.

Budgeting and managing household bills can be challenging, so we are giving tenants the option to pay any savings made through the Housing Perks app directly to their rent account.

By linking tenants’ everyday spending to rent payments, we hope this innovative app will provide an additional way to help tenants keep on top of rent payments during this cost-of-living crisis.”

Tenants can find out more and download the Housing Perks app on the Birmingham City Council website: https://www.birmingham.gov.uk/info/50202/pay_your_rent/3023/housing_perks_-_cashback_for_tenants/2
