A prominent former community building in Kings Heath is set to be sold at auction next month as part of Birmingham City Council’s ongoing efforts to raise funds amid its financial crisis.
The property at 1 High Street, Kings Heath, once home to the Kinmos charity, a mental health volunteer group, will go under the hammer with a guide price of £300,000 or more.
The three-storey, detached site sits on the corner of Kings Heath High Street and Valentine Road, directly opposite the new Kings Heath railway station. It occupies around 0.37 acres and includes a cellar, multiple treatment rooms, office space, a kitchen, and parking at the rear.
Previously used as a therapy and healing centre, the building is being marketed as suitable for “alternative uses or redevelopment”, subject to planning consent.
The council, which issued a Section 114 notice in 2023 – effectively declaring itself unable to meet its spending commitments – has been selling off assets in recent months in a bid to plug a financial gap running into hundreds of millions of pounds.
Auctioneers Bond Wolfe said no offers would be considered before or after the sale, which is scheduled for Thursday 11 September at 08:30 BST.
Buyers will be required to pay an additional £3,600 in council professional fees and a £3,000 plus VAT administration fee on top of the purchase price.
The Kinmos charity, which once operated from the site, had offered drop-in support and activities for people with lived experience of mental health issues in the area, but has since closed.
